Hot and Cold Game – Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about the Hot and Cold game

Getting Started

What is the Hot and Cold game?

Hot and Cold is a free daily word game where you try to discover a secret word by typing guesses. Instead of checking letters like Wordle, the game measures how close your guess is in meaning to the target word using AI-powered semantic similarity. Each guess receives a rank and a temperature label — the hotter you are, the closer your word is to the secret.

How do I play Hot and Cold?

Simply type any English word into the guess box on the homepage and press Enter. The game will return a rank number and a hot-or-cold indicator. A lower rank means your guess is closer in meaning to the secret word. Keep guessing, refining your words based on the feedback, until you reach rank #1 and discover the secret word.

Is Hot and Cold free to play online?

Yes, Hot and Cold is completely free to play. You do not need to create an account or pay anything to start guessing. The game runs in your browser on any device — phone, tablet, or desktop. Signing in with Google is optional and lets you save your stats across devices.

Do I need an account to play?

No. You can play as a guest immediately. Your progress for the current challenge is saved locally in your browser. If you want to preserve your stats, streaks, and history across devices, you can sign in with your Google account at any time.

Gameplay

How does the ranking system work?

When you submit a guess, the game compares your word to the secret word using a semantic similarity model. It then ranks your guess among all words in its vocabulary. Rank #1 is the secret word itself. A rank of #500 means there are 499 words that are more similar to the secret word than your guess. The lower the rank, the closer you are.

What does 'hot' and 'cold' mean in the game?

The temperature labels are a quick visual summary of your rank. 'Hot' or 'very hot' means your guess is among the closest words to the secret word. 'Warm' means you are in the right general area. 'Cold' or 'very cold' means your guess is far from the target. A color gradient bar also shows your position visually.

How many guesses can I make?

There is no limit on the number of guesses. You can make as many guesses as you need to find the secret word. However, your final score is partly based on how few guesses you needed, so efficiency is rewarded.

How do hints work?

If you are stuck, you can request a hint. The game offers up to three hint tiers per challenge. Each hint reveals a word that is semantically close to the secret word, helping you narrow down the right area. Using hints may affect your final score, so use them strategically.

What happens if I give up?

If you choose to give up, the secret word is revealed so you can learn from it. Your challenge is marked as 'given up' in your history. You can still explore past challenges in the archive to practice without pressure.

When does the daily word update?

A new secret word is released every day at midnight UTC. All players around the world play the same word on the same day. Once the day resets, the previous challenge moves to the archive where you can replay it at any time.

Strategy

What are good starting words?

Start with broad, common words that cover different categories: animal, food, place, technology, emotion, music. These category-level words help you quickly identify which area of meaning the secret word belongs to. Once you find a warm category, narrow down with more specific words.

How is Hot and Cold different from Wordle?

Wordle is a letter-position game: you get green and yellow tiles based on which letters are correct. Hot and Cold is a meaning game: you get a similarity rank based on how close your guess is in meaning to the secret word. You can guess any English word of any length, and the feedback is about semantics, not spelling.

Why do similar-sounding words sometimes rank far apart?

The game uses semantic similarity, not phonetic or visual similarity. Words that sound or look alike (such as 'bear' and 'bare') can have very different meanings and therefore very different ranks. The AI model groups words by how they are used in context, not by how they sound or are spelled.

Can I play past challenges?

Yes. Visit the archive page to browse and replay past daily challenges. This is a great way to practice your strategy without the pressure of the daily timer. The archive shows up to 30 recent challenges with your completion status for each one.
