You're on guess 14, rank #47, and the progress bar is barely warm. You know the answer is somewhere in the emotion cluster — but every synonym you try nudges the rank sideways instead of down. Sound familiar? Most players finish in 30 to 50 guesses, and there's nothing wrong with that. But the difference between 40 guesses and 16 isn't luck or vocabulary size. It's structure.

Below is a three-phase framework I keep coming back to. It won't guarantee a sub-20 every time — some secret words are genuinely tricky — but it gives each guess a clear job, which is the single biggest thing that cuts wasted attempts.

The 3-Phase Framework

Every fast solve follows the same arc. Each phase has a goal and a rough guess budget. Sticking to that budget is what keeps you under 20.

Phase 1 — Category Scan (Guesses 1–5): Figure out which broad semantic zone the secret word lives in.
Phase 2 — Semantic Funnel (Guesses 6–12): Narrow from a zone to a cluster to a tight neighborhood.
Phase 3 — Precision Strike (Guesses 13–20): Home in on the exact word using synonyms and near-matches.

The key is discipline: don't skip phases. Jumping to specific guesses during the scan wastes your budget, because each phase feeds the next with information you can't shortcut.

Phase 1: The Category Scan (Guesses 1–5)

After submitting all five probes, look at which one returned the lowest rank (hottest signal). That word tells you where to dig in Phase 2.

Phase 2: The Semantic Funnel (Guesses 6–12)

Now you know the rough category. Phase 2 is about funneling from that broad zone into a tight cluster. You have about seven guesses to go from rank #300-ish to rank #20 or better. The technique: guess words inside the hot category and watch whether the rank drops or climbs.

Pay attention to the magnitude of rank changes, not just the direction. A jump of 500+ positions means you're moving the right way. A shift of less than 100 usually means you're circling the answer and need a lateral move instead of a deeper push.

Phase 3: The Precision Strike (Guesses 13–20)

You're in the top 20. The secret word is somewhere in the tight cluster around your best guess. This phase is about trying synonyms, word forms, and closely related terms until you hit #1. Think of it as fine-tuning a radio dial — tiny adjustments, big impact.

The two turning points were guess 8 (the jump from #410 to #85 confirmed the relational direction) and guess 11 (the jump to #6 signaled a near-synonym). Reading the size of each rank change — not just whether it went up or down — is what separates a 15-guess finish from a 40-guess grind.

What If You're Stuck at Guess 15?

Sometimes Phase 2 runs long, and you hit guess 15 still hovering around rank #50–100. Three things tend to break the stall:

Switch word forms. If believe is warm, try belief, believer, or believing. The embedding model treats different forms differently, and a verb-to-noun switch can jump you 50 ranks.
Use a hint at the right moment. A Tier 1 hint gives a top-500 word — pointless if you're already past that. A Tier 2 hint at this stage is more useful because it surfaces a top-100 word you might not have considered. Our hints guide covers when each tier actually helps.
Think sideways, not forward. If you've been guessing in a straight line (happy, joy, delight, bliss), try a lateral jump to a related but different cluster. Some secret words connect two clusters rather than sitting deep inside one.

Even with these rescue moves, staying under 20 depends on Phase 1 and 2 discipline. The tighter your early scan, the more budget you have left for precision guessing.
